Thierry Daniel Henry (born on 17 August 1977) is a French football striker currently playing for Spanish La Liga club FC Barcelona and the French national team.

Henry was born and brought up in the tough neighborhood of Les Ulis, Essonne—a suburb of Paris—where he played for an array of local sides as a youngster and showed great promise as a goal-scorer. He was spotted by AS Monaco in 1990 and signed instantly, making his professional debut in 1994. In June 2007, after eight years with Arsenal, he transferred to FC Barcelona for a fee of 24 million.

Henry has enjoyed similar success with the French national squad, having won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2000 (the Delaunay Cup). In October 2007, he surpassed Michel Platini's record to become France's top goal-scorer of all time. Off the pitch, as a result of his own experience, Henry is an active spokesperson against racism in football. 听力原文: Esperanto was invented as an international language one hundred years ago by a doctor in Poland. His name was Ludovic Zamenhof. Doctor Zamenhof grew up in a part of Poland where people spoke several different languages. He believed the different languages kept people from understanding each other and living peacefully together. He wished that everyone in his part of Poland spoke the same language. In fact, he believed that if everyone spoke a common language, peace could result throughout the world. That is why he gave the world a new language. He called it "Esperanto", which means, in his language "one who hopes."

Doctor Zamenhof tried to make Esperanto so easy that anyone could learn it in one-hundred hours. It is easy to learn because it has only sixteen grammatical rules. Doctor Zamenhof's alphabet is also simple. Each letter has only one sound.

No one knows exactly how many people in the world speak Esperanto. Experts say the number could be as many as fifteen million. For most of the world's people, however, English, not Esperanto, is the second language. But Esperantists continue to spread the world about their language. They hope that Esperanto someday will become the international language for trade, science, and diplomacy.

(26)

A.Different languages prevented people from living peacefully together.

B.Because he believed that people would prefer a new language.

C.Because he believed that people would favor an easy language.

D.Because he thought that his mother tongue was too difficult to learn.

听力原文: The state of Georgia is in the midst of a major drought. Experts predict that, u
nless it rains "cats and dogs" real soon, the whole city of Atlanta will have no drinking water in four months. Lake Lanier, the source of Atlanta's water delivery system, is now at only 20 percent of its usual level. To make matters worse, (29) when Georgia water officials tried to block the flow of the Chattahoochee River southward to Alabama and Florida, those states threatened Georgia with lawsuits. They claimed that they were just as desperate for and entitled to that river water as Georgia was.

(30) The Georgia Civil Air Patrol has been trying to seed the clouds overhead for the last six months, but, unfortunately, it didn't work. State officials asked the local Cherokee Indians to do a rain dance. The Indians told them they would do a rain dance when the state returned all the land that it stole from the Cherokees. Officials hired the nation's number one water finder. He found a still for making whiskey.

Finally, the governor himself held a press conference on the steps of the state capitol building. He asked all the media to bow their heads, raised their hands to heaven, and prayed." Lord, we are asking for relief, not for us, but for the sick and the young in this state. Thank you, oh most powerful Lord. "(31)The Georgia Association of Atheists immediately sued the governor for conducting prayer sessions on state property.

(30)

A.Because Georgia planned to cut off the highways to them.

B.Because Georgia caused a big fire which affected them.

C.Because Georgia tried to block the Chattahoochee River.

D.Because Georgia had cut off the food supply to them.

Perhaps all criminals should be required to carry cards which read: "Fragile: handle with
care." It will never do, these days, to go around referring to criminal as violent thugs. You must refer to them politely as "social misfits (不能适应社会的人). The professional killer who wouldn't think twice about using his club or knife to batter some harmless old lady to death in order to rob her of her meager life savings must never be given a dose of his own medicine. He is in need of "hospital treatment". According to his misguided defenders, society is to blame. A wicked society breeds evil or so the argument goes. When you listen to this kind of talk, it makes you wonder why we aren't all criminals. We have done away with the absurdly harsh laws of the nineteenth century and this is only right. But surely enough is enough. The most senseless piece of criminal legislation in Britain and a number of other countries has been the suspension of capital punishment.

The violent criminal has become a kind of hero-figure in our time. He is glorified on the screen; he is pursued by the press and paid vast sum of money for his "memories". Newspapers which specialize in crime reporting enjoy enormous circulations. When you read about the achievements of the great train robbers, it makes you wonder whether you are reading about some glorious resistance movement. The hardened criminal is cuddled and cosseted by the sociologists on the one hand and adored as a hero by the masses on the other. It's no wonder he is a privileged person who expects and receives VIP treatment wherever he goes. Capital punishment used to be a major deterrent. It made the violent robber think twice before pulling the trigger. It gave the cold-blooded poisoner (下毒者) something to ponder about while he was shaking up or serving his arsenic cocktail. It prevented unarmed policemen from being killed while pursuing their duty by killers armed with automatic weapons. Above all, it protected the most vulnerable members of society, young children, from brutal violence. It is horrifying to think that the criminal can literally get away with murder. We all know that "life sentence" does not mean what it says. After ten years or so of good conduct, the most desperate villain is free to' return to society where he will live very comfortably, on the proceeds of his crime, or he will go on committing offences until he is caught again. People are always willing to hold liberal views at the expense of others. It's always fashionable to pose as the defender of the under-dog, so long as you, personally, remain unaffected. Did the defenders of crime, in their desire for fair play, consult the victims before they suspended capital punishment? Hardly, because all the victims were dead.

According to the passage, which of the following is the author's opinion?

A.All criminals should be required to carry cards read: "Fragile: Handle with Care."

B.Capital punishment is the only way to deter criminals.

C.Society is to blame.

D.All criminals need hospital treatment.
