听力原文: Robert was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 20

years by selling false signatures of famous Americans. Robert was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he succeeded in selling his small but genuine collection of early U.S. autographs. Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To lessen the chance of detection, he sent his imitations to England and Canada for sale and circulation. He had a hard time selling his products, because he couldn't approach a respectable buyer but must deal with people who didn't have much knowledge in the field. But Robert had many ways to make his work look real. For example, he bought old books to use aged paper of the title page, and he could treat paper and ink with chemical. In Robert's time, right after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the southern states, so Robert invented a respectable lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny's financial problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts belonging to her famous father. Robert had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. Yet all this activity did not prevent Robert from dying in poverty, leaving sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating his imitations from the originals.

(33)

听力原文: We all scream for water when thirsty. But do you know that in very hot dry weather, plants also make faint sounds as if they am crying out for help? You see, in a plant' s stem, there are hundreds of water pipes that bring water and minerals from the soil all the way up to the leaves. As the ground turns dry, it becomes harder and harder for the plants to do this. In severe droughts, plants have to fight to pull out any water available. Scientist Robert Winter has found out that when it is really bad, their water pipes snap from the tension like rubber bands. When that happens, the whole plant vibrates a little. The snapping pipes make noises ten thousand times more quiet than a whisper.

Robert knows that healthy well-watered plants are quiet. He also knows that many insects prefer a attacking dry plants rather than healthy plants. How do the insects know which are healthy plants and which are not? Robert thinks that the insects may listen for the plants that cry, and then they may buzz in m kill. To test his theory, Robert is using a device that can imitate plant cries. He attaches it to a quiet healthy plant so that the plant sounds thirsty. Then he watches the insects to see ff they attack more often than usual. If he is fight, scientists could use the insects' ability against them. They could build traps that imitate crying plants, so that when the insects buzz in to eat, they won' t buzz out.

(30)

A.They give out faint cries.

B.They make noises to drive away insects.

C.They extend their water pipes.

D.They become elastic like rubber bands.

听力原文: There are many famous museums throughout the world where people can enjoy art. Washington D.C. has the National Gallery of Art; Paris has the Louvre. Florida International University in Miami also displays art for people to see. And it does so without a building, or even a wall for its drawings and paintings.

Florida International University has opened what it says the first computer art museum in the United States. You don't have to visit the university to see the art. You just need a computer linked to a telephone.

You call the telephone number of a university computer and connect your own computer to it. All of the art is stored in the school computer. It is computer art, created electronically by artists on their own computers. In only a few minutes, your computer can receive and copy all the pictures and drawings.

Robert Shostak is director of the new computer museum. He says he started the museum because computer artists had no place to show their work.

A computer artist could only record his pictures electronically and send the records, or discs, to others to see on their computers. He could also put his pictures on paper. But to print good pictures on paper, the computer artist needed an expensive laser printer.

Robert Shostak says the electronic museum is mostly for art or computer students at schools and universities. Most of the pictures in the museum are made by students. Mister Shostak says the Florida International University museum will make computer art more fun for computer artists because more people can see it. He says artists enjoy their work much more if they can have an audience. And the great number of home computers in America could mean a huge audience for the electronic museum.

A.In Paris.

B.In London.

C.In Miami.

D.In Washington D.C.

听力原文:In one way of thinking, failure is a part of life. In another way, failure may be

听力原文: In one way of thinking, failure is a part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The "spiderstory" is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider spinning a web. The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times to span the gap. On the seventh time, he made it and went on to spin his web. Bruce is said to have taken heart and to have gone on to defeat the English.

Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one. Once he was asked why he kept on trying to make a new type of battery when he had failed so often. He replied,

"Failure? 1 have no failures. Now, I know 50,000 ways that it won' t work."

So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were you in top form. yourself? What can you change so that things may go right next time?

Second, is the goal you're trying to reach the right one? Try to do some titivating about what your real goals may be. Think about this question, "If I do succeed in this, where will it gel me?" This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn' t be doing anyway.

The third thing to bear in mind about failure is that it's a part of life. Learn to live with yourself even though you may have failed. Remember, you can't win them all .

(33)

A.Failure and success.

B.The "spider-story".

C.Two sides of failure.

D.The invention of the light bulb.

听力原文: Robert recently attended a lecture on safety at a neighborhood center. The speaker was Detective Garcia of the New York Police Department. Here is what he said:

The first thing you need to do is to get to know your neighbors. Don't be shy. Introduce yourself, especially to people who live in your building. We people who live in large cities often are reluctant to make friends, but it may save our lives later. So make sure that you know your neighbors and that they know you.

Second, don't carry a lot of money with you. If you're a man, put your wallet in your front pocket; it's harder for a pickpocket to lift it out without your knowing. Women, get a purse with straps that you can slip over your shoulder and under your arm. Don't carry a small purse that a robber can grab from you easily.

Third, if you are mugged, don't resist. I wish people would listen to me when I say that. A month ago a fifty-year-old man ended up in a hospital because he thought he could beat a mugger in a fight. But if he hadn't tried to be a hero, that probably wouldn't have happened. Don't try to be a karate expert. Give the mugger what be wants. As soon as he leaves, call the police. Report any lost credit cards without delay.

Finally, remember that there's safety in numbers. Try to avoid dark, deserted streets at night. Also, do not get on empty subway cars. If you're traveling at night, get on the car with the conductor.

(30)

A.A detective from the Los Angeles Police Department.

B.Detective Garcia from the New York Police Department.

C.Someone who lives in the neighborhood.

D.Robert's neighbor.
