听力原文: Parents may cam less than 800 yuan monthly, but they may give their child 300 yuan as pocket money every month. Too much pocket money is given to children in Shanghai, showed a survey conducted by Adolescence Center of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. The survey covers 3,800 students in elementary and secondary schools and 1,000 parents in the China's financial hub. More than 69 percent of elementary and 28.9 percent of secondary school respondents say that they can get at least 50 yuan every month from their parents, and some even 300 yuan. Meanwhile, elementary students can often receive large sums of money from their relatives during the Lunar New Year, with 76 percent of them getting 500 yuan, and 11.8 percent even 3,000 yuan. This reporter finds that 4.7 percent of student respondents whose family income is less than 800 yuan monthly receive 300 yuan every month. Experts think these students must be extravagant spenders, but what puzzles them is that only 4 percent of students from rich families (with a family income of 10 thousand yuan or above monthly) get so much for pocket money per month. Having pocket money is good for children. It gives a sense of independence, and a measure of choice in making decisions about how the money is spent, analysts said. However, too much pocket money is not good for children's development, and parents need to give their children money based on the family's economic conditions, said Sun Baohong, deputy director of the center.

听力原文: In the United States many parents teach their children at home by themselves. The U. S. Department of Education estimates there are 250,000 to 350,000 home-schooled children in the country.

The reasons of home-schooling vary widely. Children may be home-schooled because they are ill and cannot attend a normal school. Distance is the reason for children living on outback land or large farms. It may take hours to get to school and back home each day. Their parents think it inhumane to send their children to state boarding school. Some home schoolers think low of public school education which lacks of religious perspective. They want their children to learn not only traditional subject matter but strict religious teaching and a conservative political and social perspective. Other home-schoolers want to keep their children away from other children, because their family' s faith or lifestyle. is very different from that of those who attend the local school.

There are, of course, some drawbacks of home-schooling. Social isolation is the major problem. Children are naturally social creatures and love to form. friendship and learn in a group setting. Also, many home-schooled children may feel bored interacting with just their parents for many hours a day. And needless to say, not ail parents make good instructors.

听力原文: Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance. Parents often give their children an amount of money that they may spend as they wish. The purpose is to let the children learn from experience at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly.

A child may receive an allowance each week or each month. The amount is not so important. But parents should make clear what, if anything, the child is expected to pay for with the money.

At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget. Parents should not offer more money until the next allowance is to be paid.

Older children may be responsible enough to budget larger costs like those for clothing. The object is to show young people that a budget demands choices between spending and saving.

And paying children to do extra work around the house can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works.

Allowances give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with money. They can share it with others. They can spend it by buying things they want. Or they can save it.

Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice: you have to cut costs and plan for the future.

(33)

A.To let them learn some financial experiences.

B.To let them learn how to save money.

C.To let them learn how to buy gifts.

D.To let them learn how to earn money.

听力原文: One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their own lifestyles. In more traditional societies, when children grow up,. they are expected to live in the same area as their parent, to marry people that their parents know and approve of, and often to continue the family occupation. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family home at an early age, marry--or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents.

In our upwardly mobile society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the ambitions that parents have for their children are another cause of the diversion between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.

Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society, the knowledge of a lifetime may become dated overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities.

As parents, we usually groom our children's future according to what we are or what we wanted to be. We buy them toys and educational materials according to what we dream our children would become someday.

听力原文: Today we're going to talk about shyness and discuss recent research on ways to help children learn to get along with others socially.

Many people consider themselves shy. In fact, forty percent of people who took part in our survey said they were shy--that's two out of every five people. And there are studies to indicate that the tendency toward shyness may be inherited. But certain timid children doesn't mean that they are bound to be shy forever. There is something parents, teachers, and the children themselves can do to overcome this tendency--and even to prevent it.

Our researchers found that if parents gently push their shy children to try new things, they can help these children become less afraid and less inhibited. Another way to help shy children is to train them in social skills. For example, there are special training programs where children are taught things like looking at other children while talking to them, talking about others' interests, and even smiling.

These groups have been very successful in giving shy children a place to feel safe and accepted, and building up their self-esteem.

(33)

A.Showing children how to behave.

B.Helping children overcome shyness.

C.Several causes of children's shyness.

D.How timid children become shy adults.

听力原文: When people care for an elderly relative, they often do not use available community services such as adult daycare centers. If the caregivers are adult children, they are more likely to use such services, especially because they often have jobs and other responsibilities. In contrast, a spouse usually the wife, is much less likely to use support services or to put the dependent person in a nursing home. Social workers discover that the wife normally tries to take care of her husband herself for as long as she can in order not to use up their life savings. Researchers have found that caring for the elderly can be a very positive experience. The elderly appreciated the care and attention they received. They were affectionate and cooperative. However, even when care-giving is satisfying, it is hard work. Social workers and experts on aging offer caregivers and potential caregivers help when arranging for the care of an elderly relative. One consideration is to ask parents what they want before they become sick or dependent. Perhaps they prefer going into a nursing home and can select one in advance. On the other hand, they may want to live with their adult children. Caregivers must also learn to state their needs and opinions clearly and ask for help from others especially brothers and sisters. Brothers and sisters are often willing to help, but they may not know what to do.

Questions:

29. Why are adult children more likely to use community services to help care for elderly parents?

30. Why are most wives unwilling to put their dependent husbands into nursing homes?

31. According to the passage, what must caregivers learn to do?

听力原文: Some children are natural-born bosses. They have a strong need to make decisions, manage their environment, and lead rather than follow. Stephen Jackson, a Year One student, "operates under the theory of what's mine is mine and what's yours is mine," says his mother. "The other day I bought two new Star Wars light sabers. Later, I saw Stephen with the two new ones while his brother was using the beat-up ones."

"Examine the extended family, and you'll probably find a bossy grandparent, aunt, uncle or cousin in every generation. It's an inheritable trait," says Russell Barkley, a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina. Other children who may not be particularly bossy can gradually gain dominance when they sense their parents are weak, hesitant, or in disagreement with each other.

Whether its inborn nature or developed character at work, too much control in the hands at the young isn't healthy for children or the family, Fear is at the root of a lot of bossy behavior, says family psychologist John Taylor. "Children", he says in his book. From Defiance to Cooperation, "have secret feelings of weakness" and "a desire to feel safe." It's the parents' role to provide that protection.

When a "boss child" doesn't learn limits at home, the stage is set for a host of troubles outside the family. The overly willful and unbending child may have trouble obeying teachers or coaches, for example, or trouble keeping friends. It can be pretty lonely as the top dog if no one likes your bossy ways.

"I see more and more parents giving up their power," says Barkley, who bas studied bossy behavior. for more than 30 years. "They bend too far because they don't want to be as strict as their own parents were. But they also feel less confident about their parenting skills. Their kids, in turn, feel more anxious."

(33)

A.They make good decisions.

B.They lack care from others.

C.They have little sense of fear.

D.They show self-centeredness.
