听力原文:W: Can I help you?

M: Yes. I am a bit confused. My sociology class is supposed to read a chapter in a book called Sociology and the Modem Age. According to the syllabus, the book is in the library, but I haven't been able to find it.

W: Do you have your syllabus with you? May I see it?

M: Yes, uh...I put it on the front of my sociology notebook. Oh, here it is.

W: Let me see. Oh yes. Your professor has placed this book on reserve. That means you cannot find it on the shelves in its usual place. You need to go to a special room called the reserve room. It's down the hall and to the right.

W: I'm sorry—I still don't understand what you mean by "on reserve".

W: You see, your professor wants everyone in the class to read the chapter. If one student removes the book from the library, it is likely that none of the other students will have the opportunity to read it. So, your professor has insured that all students have the opportunity to read it by placing it on reserve.

M: So, will I be able to find this book?

W: Yes, when a book is on reserve, a student can go to the reserve room and ask the reserve librarian for the book. The student can have the book for a few hours, and he or she MUST read it in the library during that time. That way, the book stays in the library, and all students have a chance to read it.

M: Okay. Thank you. I understand now.

W: Will there be anything else?

M: No! I am on my way to the reserve room. Thanks again! Where did the conversation happen?

Part Ⅱ Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)

Directions: I this part you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer Sheet 1. For questions 1-7, choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D ). For questions 8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage.

How to Create a Home Library

"I cannot live without books," declared U. S. President Thomas Jefferson to his friend John Adams. Indeed, Jefferson was an obsessive book collector from a young age, amassing (收集) three separate home libraries in his lifetime. Jefferson's library was considered the finest in the country, and his collection doubled the holdings of the Library of Congress. Still, Jefferson didn't let the shelves at Monticello sit empty. By the time he died 11 years later, he had more than 2 000 volumes in his library.

Jefferson's library might fit your conception of an old-fashioned home library with leather-bound books, wood paneling and uncomfortable furniture. But home libraries can be a dynamic expression of the owner's personality. Creating a home library is a fun way to display your interests while establishing a special space for reading.

Home Library Organization

When you started using the public library, you probably learned about Melvil Dewey and his system for ordering libraries. The Dewey Decimal Classification System has ten broad categories for organizing books, including philosophy, religion and the arts. Each category is assigned a number, so for example, when you want a book on modern art, you head to the 700 block. Larger libraries, such as those at universities, tend to use the Library of Congress Classification System because it offers a more specific array of subjects for categorization, adding subjects such as medicine and law for a total of 21 categories.

Your home library may or may not be as large as your local public library, but a good system of organization will still help you find the book you want quickly. You could take a page from Dewey and the Library of Congress and sort books by subject matter. Sections for subjects such as history, technology or fiction might make their retrieval easier. This system also would allow you to highlight a particular passion, such as an extensive collection of World War II history.

Here are some other ways to organize a collection.

Alphabetizing by author works well for fiction but not necessarily for nonfiction books of various subjects.

Judging a book by its cover is usually frowned upon, but sorting by color can be aesthetically pleasing to some. Those generally forgetful about the colors of their books might disagree.

After a painful breakup, the main character in Nick Hornby's book "High Fidelity" organizes his record collection autobiographically in the order he acquired them. A chronological organization might include shelves that track the progress of your life, from beloved childhood reading and college text-books to parenting books.

To some readers, there are two ways to look at books: read and unread. Prioritizing (区分优先次序) when you might need the book will allow you to keep unread books at the forefront of your collection, as well as books you reach for frequently, such as reference books or favorite novels.

Library Furniture

While it might be difficult for a book lover to spend money on something other than books, at some point ,you will need some bookshelves. Built-in, bookshelves can provide floor-to-ceiling storage and space savings. They can be tucked under staircases or other out-of-the-way spaces; however, they're not a good choice for renters, and they can represent a big investment in terms of price and installation. Freest

.

M: I'd be pleased to. What can I do for you?

W: Suppose I want to find a book "Gone With The Wind" by Margaret Mitchell, would I look under Margaret and then under Mitchell until I come to the one who wrote the "Gone With The Wind" or would I simply look under the title through the catalogue myself?

M: Do you see those desk-top computer terminals over there? We now use them to locate our books. We think it's more efficient than the old card catalogue system. Come on, I'll show you how to use it. You decide what book you want and pick the microfiche with that letter on it. It's all in alphabetical order. You can know the name of the book, the name of the author or subject. They're all lumped together on the same sheet.

W: That sounds easy enough. Suppose I want to borrow "War and Remembrance" by Herman Work.

M: You could look under "W" for the title, then we'll look on the "H" sheet for the author. Turn on the light, then move the microfiche, and there it is. The "W" after the library code number tells you that it's here at the back branch of the library, rather than at one of our other branches.

W: Today, I just want to find a novel for some light reading. It strikes me that this novel "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck is what I should like to take.

M: You are perfectly right to decide upon that book It's very much in demand. Please fill out this card. Do you have any identification which shows your new address? I need to see something that verifies that you're a resident of the country ... All right now. I'll give you a list of all the branches before you go. These books may only be used here, and no one is permitted to borrow them.

W: I'll be here for five years, so I'd like to learn to use the library as efficiently as possible. I wonder if someone might have time to show me around.

M: With pleasure. These shelves right next to us have our latest acquisitions of fiction and nonfiction The older fiction books are in alphabetical row according to the author's last name. Stop by the desk on your way out to check your books and to pick up a brochure description of all our services.

W: Thank you very much for your help. I've noticed that your periodical section is quite complete. I think I'll explore the whole library on my own in order to acquaint myself with all that you have told me.

听力原文:M: Hello, Jenny. What are you doing here?

W: Hello, Mark! This is my daughter, Sarah. It's the school holidays, so we're shopping now. We're not sure what to do after that.

M: Well, there's a show for children this afternoon in the library where I work.

W: Oh? What time is it at?

M: It starts at two and finishes at three thirty, it's only a quarter past one now. Do you think Sarah would like that?

W: How much is a ticket?

M: Well, it's one pound fifty for adults and seventy-five pence for children. Programmes are twenty-five pence.

W: And does your library run a reading course in the holidays?

M: Yes, and if children under ten, like Sarah, read four books in six weeks, we give them something to take home.

W: What? like a book?

M: Well, this year it's a pen, but sometimes it's a book or a school bag. Meet me after the show and I'll give you more details.

W: Thanks. See you later then.

It may be the last book you'll ever buy. And certainly, from a practical standpoint, it wi
ll be the only book you'll ever need. No. It's not the Bible or some New Age tome promising enlightenment—al though it would let you carry around both texts simultaneously. It's an electronic book—a single volume that could contain a library of information or, if your tastes run toward what's current, every title on to day's best-seller list. And when you're clone with those, you could refill it with new titles.

Why an electronic book? Computers can store a ton of data and their laptop companions make all that information portable. True enough. But laptops(便携式电脑) and similar portable information de vices require a lot of power and heavy batteries to keep their LCD screens operating. And LCDs are not easy to read in the bright light of the sun.

Fact is, when it comes to portability, easy viewing, and low power requirements, it's hard to beat plain old paper.

So let's make the ink electronic.

That's the deceptively simple premise behind a project currently coming to fruition at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Some hurdles mostly having to do with large-scale manufacturing remain, so it will be a few years before you see an electronic book for sale in stores. But the basic technology already exists, developed at the Institute's Media Lab by a team led by physicist Joe Jacobson.

Thanks to electronic ink, the book essentially typesets itself, receiving instructions for each page via electronics housed in the spine. From a power standpoint, this process makes the electronic book very efficient. Unlike an LCD screen, which uses power all the time, energy is no longer needed to view the electronic book's pages once they are typeset. Only a small battery would be required, as opposed to the large ones needed to power laptop computers and their LCDs.

Convenience, though, is still the main attraction—and that means more than simple portability. Be cause the information is in electronic form, it can be easily manipulated.

Jacobson thinks an electronic book will be affordable around $ 200 for a basic read-only model to about $ 400 for one that would record your margin scribbles. Some hurdles remain, though, before you can take an electronic book with you anywhere. Paper is produced in long sheets, and Jacobson is still working on the best method to integrate electronic ink into that process. To avoid having to use thousands of tiny wires on each page, the ink itself must be conductive. Such ink was recently demonstrated in the lab but has yet to be produced in volume. "Essentially," notes Jacobson, "We're trying to print chips."

Jacobson is confident, however, that this can be done on a large scale. If Jacobson succeeds, he will have made the book for the 21st century.

According to the passage, which book is the only book you'll ever need?

A.Americans like sports and sports reveal much about the changing ethnic structure of the United States

B.A single volume.

C.New Age tome.

D.An electronic book.
