听力原文: Good morning, class. I have some great news for you all. Contemporary novelist Marie Irvine is coming to our university next month to lecture on the influence of women writers in the literary scene. If you can recall, we have read a few of Ms. Irvine's works in our textbook, and she is often considered one of the dozen best writers in the country. Not only is she going to give a lecture here, but also I have been able to convince her to lead a creative writing workshop for interested students. Since this is an advanced writing class, and you all have made considerable progress, I decided to offer the class the opportunity to join the workshop before this is offered to the entire campus.

The workshop will be two days long, held in the main lecture hall of this building. Ms. Irvine has assured me that participants in the workshop will work closely with her and get all the personal attention they need. She will particularly focus on the problems of female writing. Since there are only fifteen spots open for this workshop, I suggest you sign up as soon as possible before all the seats are taken. The cost of the workshop is $ 200, and this fee includes all your materials and a dinner banquet that will be held afterwards. You must pay an $ 80 deposit to reserve a spot, and the remainder of the tuition must be paid in two weeks. I should mention that the English department is co-sponsoring the workshop. If you would like to register, please see me after class. I encourage you to take advantage of this rare opportunity.

听力原文: Most Americans don't like to get advice from the members of their family. When t
hey need advice they don't usually ask the people they know. Instead, many Americans write letters to newspapers and magazines which give advice on different subjects, including family problems, the use of language, health, cooking, child care, clothes and how to buy a house or a car. Most newspapers regularly patrol letters from readers with problems. Every other week along with the letter there are answers sent by people who are thought to: know how to solve such problems.

Some of these writers are doctors; others are lawyers or educators. But among the most famous writers of advice are two women without special training for this kind of work. One of them answers letters addressed to "Dear Abby". The other is addressed as "Dear Ann". Experience is their preparation for giving advice.

There is one writer who has not lived long enough to have much experience. She is a girl named Angel Brown, who started writing advice for newspaper readers at the age of ten. Her advice to young readers now appears regularly in the Philadelphia Bulletin in a column called "Dear Angel".

(19)

A.ask the people they know for advice.

B.ask their family members for advice.

C.write to newspapers for advice.

D.write to their friends for advice.

听力原文: Science fiction writers have often imagined human beings going to live on Mars. But these days, scientists are taking the idea seriously. It has a great deal to recommend it, since it might solve the problem of overcrowding on the earth. But obviously, it would not be worth making the effort unless people could live there naturally. If the atmosphere were like that of the earth, this might be possible. But in fact it is mostly carbon dioxide. Apart from that, there are other problems to be overcome. For example, the temperature would have to be raised from 60 degrees below zero to 15 degrees above it. Scientists who study Mars have laid down the program that they can follow. To begin with, they will have to find out whether life has ever existed on the planet of Mars in the past. Secondly, they will have to make a reliable map of its surface. And finally, they will have to make a list of the gases. Above all, they will have to discover how much nitrogen it possesses, since nitrogen is four fifths of the air we breathe. They are surprisingly optimistic about raising the temperature on Mars and believe it could be done in two hundred years. It will take a bit longer, though, to transform. the atmosphere so that human beings, could live there. Scientists estimate that this will take one hundred thousand years.

(33)

A.Because people might have to migrate there someday.

B.Because it is very much like the earth.

C.Because it is easier to explore than other planets.

D.Because its atmosphere is different from that of the earth.

Harlem Renaissance (文艺复兴)—A Brief Introduction

Important Features

1. Harlem Renaissance(HR) is the name given to the period from the end of World War I and through the middle of the 1930s Depression, during which a group of talented African-American writers produced a sizable body of literature in the four prominent genres of poetry, fiction, drama, and essay.

3. Common themes: alienation, marginality, the use of folk material, the use of the blues tradition, the problems of writing for an elite audience.

Despite their many differences of temperament and of literary perspective, Emerson, Thorea
u, Hawthorne, Melville, and Whitman share certain beliefs. Common to all these writers is their humanistic perspective. Its basic premises are that humans are the spiritual center of the universe and that in them alone is the clue to nature, history, and ultimately the cosmos itself. Without denying outright the existence either of a deity or of brute matter, this perspective nevertheless rejects them as exclusive principles of interpretation and prefers to explain humans and the world in terms of humanity itself. This preference is expressed most clearly in the Transcendentalist principle that the structure of the universe literally duplicates the structure of the individual self; therefore, all knowledge begins with self-knowledge. This common perspective is almost always universalized. Its emphasis is not upon the individual as a particular European or American, but upon the human as universal, freed from the accidents of time, space, birth, and talent. Thus, for Emerson, the "American Scholar" turns out to be simply" Man thinking"; while, for Whitman, the "Song of Myself" merges imperceptible into a song of all the "children of Adam, "where" every atom belonging to ale as good belongs to you." Also common to all five writers is the belief that individual virtue and happiness depend upon selfrealization, which, in turn, depends upon the harmonious reconciliation of two universal psychological tendencies: first, the self- asserting impulse of the individual to withdraw, to remain unique and separate, and to be responsible only to himself or herself, and second, the self-transcending impulse of the individual to embrace the whole world in the experience of a single moment and to know and become one with that world. These conflicting impulses can be seen in the democratic ethic. Democracy advocates individualism, the preservation of the individual's freedom and self-expressi0n. But the democratic self is torn between the duty to self, which is implied by the concept of liberty, and the duty to society, Which is implied by the concepts of equality and fraternity.

A third assumption common to the five writers is that intuition and imagination offer a surer road to truth than does abstract logic or scientific method. It is illustrated by their emphasis upon introspection -- their belief that the clue to external nature is to be found in the inner world of individual psychology -- and by their interpretation of experience as, in essence, symbolic. Both these stresses presume an organic relationship between the self and the cosmos of which only intuition and imagination can properly take account. These writers' faith in the imagination and in themselves as practitioners or imagination led them to conceive of the writer as a seer and enabled them to achieve supreme confidence in their own moral and metaphysical insights.

The author's discussion of Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Melville and Whitman is primarily concerned with explaining ______.

A.some of their beliefs concerning the world and the place that humanity occupies in the universal order

B.some of their beliefs concerning the relationship between humanism and democracy

C.the way some of their beliefs are shaped by differences in temperament and literary outlook

D.the effects of some of their beliefs on their writings
