听力原文: At sixteen Henry Vincent was separated from his family as a result of the war. He wandered aimlessly from one country to another before finally settling down in Australia, where he trained as an electronics engineer. He established his own business but it called for so much work that marriage was out of the question.

His retirement suddenly made him realize how lonely he was and he decided to take up a hobby. With his interest in electronics, being an amateur radio operator seemed a natural choice. He installed his own equipment and obtained a license and his call sign, which is the set of letters and numbers used to identify oneself when making radio amateur operators all over the world.

Soon Henry had a great many contacts in far off places. One in particular was a man in California with whom he had much in common. One night the man in California happened to mention the village in Europe he had come from. Suddenly, Henry realized that this man was in fact his younger brother, Peter. At first, the two brothers were at a loss for words but then little by little they filled in the details of their past lives and not long after Henry Vincent flew to California to be reunited with his brother.

(30)

A.He trained as an electronics engineer.

B.He trained as a mechanical engineer.

M: Hi, Jan. I'm planning to go to London by train. Do you want to come with me?

M: A card for six months is sixteen pounds.

W: So how do I get one?

M: You need two photographs—one for the card and one for the form.

W: I don't have to show my passport or my driving license, do I?

M: No, Jan, you only need a letter from your college.

听力原文: Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio on February 11,1847. He was not an ordinary person. He was one of the greatest inventors in the history. (29)The phonograph, the light bulb, the movie camera, and sewing machine are just some of his many inventions that helped change the world.

Thomas did not go to school. His mom taught him at home. When he was twelve, he got his first job at the train station as a train boy selling candy and newspapers. He loved books and he spent all his money on them. One day while trying to catch a train, a trainman reached and grabbed him by the ears. While pulling Edison up, something cracked in his ears and right after that he began to go deaf.

When Thomas had made enough money years later, he wanted to buy a laboratory. He paid a group of scientists to think of inventions and see if the inventions would work. That setup worked so well that other companies did this too. (31)Now today every company and university in the whole world has a research department, and it all began with Edison's research group.

He is most famous for the invention of the electric light bulb. (30) He had burned himself with candles so many times when he read; he wanted a way to see without a candle. It took him just over a year to invent a practical light bulb. Edison founded the Electric Light Company in 1878.

In his seventies he still worked sixteen hours a day, and was one of the most famous men in America. By the time he died at West Orange, New Jersey on October 18,1931, he had created over 1,000 inventions.

(30)

A.Telephone and the light bulb.

B.Phonograph and movie camera.

听力原文:M: Excuse me, madam. Would you mind letting me take a look in your bag?

W: I beg your pardon?

M: I'd like to look into your bag, if you don't mind.

W: Who are you to insist? I advise you to take off, before I call a policeman.

M: I am a policeman, madam. Here's my identity card.

W: What'? Oh ... well ... and just what fight does that give you to go around looking into people's bags?

M: None whatsoever, unless I have reason to believe that there's something in the bags belonging to someone else.

W: What do you mean belonging to someone else?

M: Well, perhaps, things that haven't been paid for?

W: Are you talking about stolen goods?

M: Exactly, but if the citizens are honest, they wouldn't mind, would they?

W: Stopping people in the street and demanding to see what in their bags!

M: I'm sorry. I'm trying to do my job as politely as possible. However, I must insist on seeing what you have in your bag.

W: And what, precisely, do you expect to find in there'?

M: Thank you, madam.

W: Not at all.

M: Mm. Sixteen lipsticks?

W: Yes, nothing unusual in that. I like to change the color with my mood.

M: I see you smoke a lot. Fifteen cigarette lighters!

W: Yes, I am rather a heavy smoker.

M: Now are you going to come along quietly or am I going to have to call for help?

W: But this is unfair!

听力原文:Esperanto was invented as an international language one hundred years ago by a do

听力原文: Esperanto was invented as an international language one hundred years ago by a doctor in Poland. His name was Ludovic Zamenhof. Doctor Zamenhof grew up in a part of Poland where people spoke several different languages. He believed the different languages kept people from understanding each other and living peacefully together. He wished that everyone in his part of Poland spoke the same language. In fact, he believed that if everyone spoke a common language, peace could result throughout the world. That is why he gave the world a new language. He called it "Esperanto", which means, in his language "one who hopes."

Doctor Zamenhof tried to make Esperanto so easy that anyone could learn it in one-hundred hours. It is easy to learn because it has only sixteen grammatical rules. Doctor Zamenhof's alphabet is also simple. Each letter has only one sound.

No one knows exactly how many people in the world speak Esperanto. Experts say the number could be as many as fifteen million. For most of the world's people, however, English, not Esperanto, is the second language. But Esperantists continue to spread the world about their language. They hope that Esperanto someday will become the international language for trade, science, and diplomacy.

(26)

A.Different languages prevented people from living peacefully together.

B.Because he believed that people would prefer a new language.

C.Because he believed that people would favor an easy language.

D.Because he thought that his mother tongue was too difficult to learn.
